Parts choice is where a repair quote can vary substantially, and where the difference between honest and dishonest shops shows up. Here is where the money genuinely matters.
The categories
**OEM** — the part sold through the dealer in the manufacturer's box. Guaranteed to be the correct specification.
**OE supplier** — the same part from the company that manufactures it for the automaker, in their own box. Frequently identical hardware at a lower price, and often the sweet spot.
**Quality aftermarket** — reputable manufacturers producing to or above OE specification. For many components this is genuinely equivalent.
**Economy aftermarket** — the cheap end. Sometimes fine for a low-stress component, frequently not.
**Remanufactured** — a used core rebuilt with new wear components. Common for alternators, starters, calipers and steering racks, and quality varies enormously by remanufacturer.
Where we recommend OEM or OE supplier
**Electronics and sensors.** Mass airflow sensors, oxygen sensors, crank and cam position sensors, and anything the engine computer relies on. Cheap sensors produce readings that are close but wrong, which causes drivability problems that are maddening to chase because nothing has technically failed.
**Timing components.** Belts, chains, tensioners and guides. The failure consequence is catastrophic engine damage. This is not the place to save money.
**Anything involving the emissions or engine management system.**
**Complex modules and control units.**
Where quality aftermarket is genuinely fine
**Brake pads and rotors** from a reputable manufacturer are equivalent and sometimes better. Premium aftermarket friction is a real product category.
**Filters** — oil, air, cabin, fuel — from known brands.
**Suspension components** like shocks, struts, sway bar links and control arms from established manufacturers.
**Belts and hoses** from major suppliers.

Where cheap parts cost the most
The real cost of a bad part is rarely the part. It is the labor to install it twice.
On a job with significant labor — a water pump behind a timing cover, a starter buried under an intake, a wheel bearing pressed into a knuckle — saving a modest amount on the part and having it fail in eighteen months means paying the entire labor again. On those jobs, quality parts are straightforwardly the cheaper option.
On a job with minimal labor, an economy part is a smaller gamble.
Remanufactured parts
For alternators, starters and calipers, a quality remanufactured unit from a reputable rebuilder is a sensible choice that saves real money. A cheap reman from an unknown source is a coin flip.
Ask about the warranty. A rebuilder confident in their work backs it, and the warranty terms tell you more about expected quality than the price does.
Warranty considerations
For a vehicle under factory warranty, using non-OEM parts on certain repairs can create complications. Worth checking before a major repair on a newer vehicle.
