Your Vehicle Is on the Severe Service Schedule

Almost every South Florida vehicle meets the manufacturer's own definition of severe service. Most owners follow the normal schedule anyway.

Open any owner's manual and there are two maintenance schedules: normal and severe. Almost nobody reads the second one, and almost every vehicle here qualifies for it.

The manufacturer's own definition

Severe service typically includes some combination of: frequent short trips, extended idling, stop-and-go traffic, sustained high ambient temperatures, dusty conditions, and towing or carrying loads.

South Florida delivers most of that as a matter of course. Sustained high temperatures for most of the year, heavy stop-and-go traffic, extended idling in that traffic with the A/C running, and coastal salt on top.

What changes

  • **Oil and filter** intervals shorten, because heat and short trips both degrade oil faster and short trips let moisture accumulate in it.
  • **Transmission fluid** intervals shorten substantially. Heat is the primary enemy of an automatic transmission and traffic generates it.
  • **Coolant** matters more, because the cooling system is working harder for more of the year.
  • **Brake fluid**, which absorbs moisture and matters more in humidity.
  • **Air and cabin filters**, which load faster.
  • **Brakes**, which wear on stops rather than miles.

Oil life monitors

Most modern vehicles have an algorithm that estimates oil life from operating conditions. They are generally good and they do account for some severe-service factors — but they are an estimate, and on a vehicle that idles for long periods they can be optimistic. Time matters too: oil degrades in the sump whether the vehicle moves or not.

What to actually do

Read the severe schedule in your own manual and follow that one. It is not a sales tactic — it is the manufacturer's own guidance for the conditions you are actually driving in.
