The frustrating one. New battery, alternator checks out, and the car is dead again after sitting for two days. That is a parasitic draw, and it is one of the more satisfying problems to actually find.
Some draw is normal
Modern cars never fully shut off. The body control module, the security system, the radio's memory, the keyless entry receiver and a dozen other modules all draw a small current continuously. That is designed in.
Modules also go to sleep in stages after the car is locked, so measuring draw immediately after shutdown gives a falsely high reading. Proper testing means waiting for the vehicle to go fully to sleep, which can take a while, before measuring.
What is not normal is a draw large enough to flatten a healthy battery over a few days.
The usual culprits
**Aftermarket accessories** are the number one cause. Alarm systems, remote starters, stereo amplifiers, dash cameras, LED light bars, GPS trackers and phone chargers wired to a constant-hot circuit. Anything installed after the car left the factory is the first place to look, particularly if the symptom appeared after that installation.
**Lights that stay on** — glovebox, trunk, vanity, under-hood. A trunk light with a failed switch will flatten a battery over a weekend and you will never see it.
**A failing module that will not sleep.** Body control modules, radios and infotainment units can stay awake due to internal faults or software issues.
**A shorted diode in the alternator**, which lets current flow backward through it when the engine is off. This is common enough to be worth ruling out early.
**Corroded or damaged wiring**, which in South Florida humidity and salt air is a real category. Chafed insulation against a body panel provides a path to ground.
**A stuck relay** holding a circuit energized.
How it gets diagnosed
The approach is straightforward in principle: measure total current draw with the vehicle asleep, then pull fuses one at a time and watch for the draw to drop. When it drops, the circuit you just opened contains the problem, and the fuse box legend tells you what that circuit feeds.
In practice it takes patience, because you have to let the vehicle sleep, and opening a door to reach the interior fuse box wakes everything back up. Doing it properly is a slow, methodical process rather than a quick check.
The habits that mimic a draw
Not every dead battery is a fault:
- Very short trips that never let the alternator fully recharge the battery
- A car that sits unused for long stretches — batteries self-discharge
- A battery that is simply old and has lost capacity
- Accessories left plugged into a permanently live outlet
- Repeated deep discharges, which permanently reduce a battery's capacity
That last point matters. Every time a battery is run completely flat and jump-started, it loses some capacity permanently. A battery that has been killed several times is not going to recover, even after the draw is fixed.
If the car sits
For vehicles used infrequently, a battery maintainer keeps the battery topped up without overcharging. It is inexpensive and it dramatically extends battery life on a car that is not driven daily.
