This is one of the most diagnostically useful symptoms a vehicle produces, because it points almost directly at the fault.
Why the pattern matters
At highway speed, air is forced through the radiator by the vehicle moving. In traffic, the only thing moving air through the radiator is the cooling fan. A vehicle that cools fine at speed and overheats when stopped has adequate coolant and an airflow problem.
What to check, in order
- 1**The cooling fan.** Is it running when the engine is hot? On many vehicles it should come on with the A/C as well. A failed fan motor, relay, temperature switch or fan clutch all produce this exact symptom.
- 2**The condenser and radiator faces.** Packed with bugs, leaves and debris, which restricts airflow at low speed far more than at high speed.
- 3**The fan shroud.** A missing or damaged shroud dramatically reduces how much air a fan actually pulls through the radiator.
- 4**The fan clutch** on vehicles that have one — a failed clutch lets the fan freewheel.
The opposite pattern
Overheating at highway speed but not in traffic points the other way — at coolant flow rather than airflow. That is a thermostat, a water pump, a blocked radiator or low coolant.
If the gauge climbs while you are driving
- 1Turn the A/C off and the heater on full — the heater core is a second radiator and it genuinely helps.
- 2In traffic, pull over and idle rather than crawling.
- 3If it keeps climbing, shut the engine off.
- 4Do not keep driving. An overheated engine can warp a head or fail a head gasket, which is a repair on an entirely different scale from a fan relay.
Why it matters here
South Florida traffic and heat together are the exact conditions this fault appears in, and a cooling system that is marginal will find the worst possible afternoon to demonstrate it.
