A car that will not start gets a new battery installed more often than any other repair, and a meaningful share of the time the battery was fine. The alternator was not charging it. Here is how to separate them.
What each one does
The **battery** stores energy and provides the large current burst needed to crank the engine. The **alternator** generates electricity once the engine is running, powering everything and recharging the battery.
If the alternator fails, the car runs on battery alone until it is flat — which is why an alternator failure often presents as a dead battery.
Symptoms that point at the battery
- Slow, labored cranking that gets worse over days
- Clicking rapidly when you turn the key, with dash lights dimming
- The car starts fine after a jump and runs normally afterward
- Problems are worst after the car has sat overnight
- Visible corrosion on the terminals or a swollen case
- The battery is several years old
Symptoms that point at the alternator
- The battery or charging light on the dash, which is the direct indicator
- Headlights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev
- The car dies shortly after a jump start, or dies while driving
- Electrical accessories behaving strangely while running
- A whining or growling noise from the front of the engine
- A burning smell from a slipping belt
That third item is the clearest test available without tools. Jump the car, disconnect the cables, and see whether it keeps running. A car with a good alternator and a dead battery keeps running. A car with a failed alternator dies within a few minutes.
The actual test
A voltmeter settles it in a minute:
- **Engine off:** a healthy fully charged battery reads around 12.6 volts. Meaningfully below 12.4 means it is discharged; below 12 suggests it is failing or deeply discharged.
- **Engine running:** you should see roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts, which is the alternator charging. Reading the same as engine-off means the alternator is not charging. Reading well above that range suggests a failing voltage regulator, which overcharges and destroys batteries.
A proper load test is better still — it measures whether the battery can actually deliver current under load rather than just holding a surface charge. A battery can read 12.6 volts and still fail under load.
The South Florida factor
Heat is harder on batteries than cold. High temperatures accelerate the internal chemical degradation and evaporate electrolyte, and our under-hood temperatures are high year-round. Batteries in South Florida routinely live shorter lives than the same battery would in a temperate climate.
Humidity and salt air also drive terminal corrosion, which creates high resistance connections that look like a dead battery.
The third possibility
If the battery tests good and the alternator charges properly, but the battery keeps going flat overnight, you have a **parasitic draw** — something staying awake and drawing current after the car is shut off. That is its own diagnosis and a common one on vehicles with aftermarket electronics installed.
It is also worth checking the starter. A starter drawing excessive current can produce slow cranking that looks exactly like a weak battery.
