When we get called for an electrical fault that makes no sense, the first question is what has been added to the car. A surprising share of the time the answer explains everything.
Why aftermarket wiring causes trouble
Factory wiring is engineered, routed, protected and documented. Aftermarket installations vary from professional to catastrophic, and the bad ones share the same handful of shortcuts:
- **Tapping into circuits that were not designed for the extra load**, which overheats wiring and blows fuses
- **Splices made with quick-taps or twisted wire and electrical tape**, which corrode and fail, especially in Florida humidity
- **No inline fuse** on a circuit connected directly to the battery, which is a genuine fire risk
- **Wiring routed against sharp edges** without grommets, so it chafes through over time
- **Grounds attached to painted surfaces** rather than bare metal, producing a high-resistance connection
- **Constant-hot connections** for accessories that should be switched, creating a parasitic draw
What gets installed and what it causes
**Alarms and remote starters** are the biggest offenders because they interface with ignition, starter, door locks and security systems. A failing aftermarket alarm module can prevent a car from starting entirely, and a car that will not crank with no other explanation deserves a look for one.
**Stereo amplifiers** draw serious current and are frequently wired directly to the battery. Common problems are inadequate fusing, alternator whine through the speakers from a grounding issue, and a parasitic draw from an amp that never fully powers down.
**Dash cameras and GPS trackers** are small and they run continuously. On a car that sits several days, a tracker on a constant-hot circuit is a common cause of a flat battery.
**LED light bars and auxiliary lighting** draw significant current and are frequently added without upgrading the supply circuit.
**Trailer wiring** is exposed to weather and is a frequent source of corrosion faults that back-feed into the vehicle's lighting circuits, producing genuinely confusing symptoms.
The diagnostic challenge
Factory wiring diagrams do not include what somebody added in a parking lot in 2019. Tracing an undocumented harness means physically following wires, which takes time, and that is exactly why these faults cost more to diagnose than factory ones.
If you know what was installed and roughly when, say so. If you have paperwork from the installer, that is genuinely valuable.
The right way to add accessories
- Fuse every circuit at the source, close to the battery
- Use proper connectors — soldered and heat-shrunk, or quality crimps, not quick-taps
- Ground to bare metal at a proper ground point, not a painted bracket
- Route wiring away from heat and moving parts, with grommets through any panel
- Use a relay for anything drawing significant current rather than running it through a switch
- Connect switched accessories to a switched source so they cannot drain the battery
- Document what you did and where
When removal is the fix
Sometimes the honest recommendation is removing a failed aftermarket system entirely and restoring the factory wiring. On a dead alarm module that is preventing the car from starting, that is frequently faster, cheaper and more reliable than trying to repair a discontinued unit.
